Lesson #2 - How Do I Keep Growing?

Asking Jesus Christ into your life is the first step in a whole new life for you. But it is just that - the first step. God wants you to keep going and keep growing in your new life. God has a special plan for your life and He has given you some direction for living out that plan.

It would be very easy for you to just check the answer boxes - but you will grow the most if you look up the answers in your Bible for yourself. When it comes to the answers, don't take our word for - look it up yourself! OK?

1) Turn in your Bible to 1 Peter 2:2: What does this verse say that, as a new Christian, I am?

2) Don't be upset because it called you a "baby". That is where we all must start from. Even in your human life, you had to start as a baby. It is no different in your Christian life. Just as your parents are teaching you how to grow as a human being, God has given us a Teacher to help us grow as a Christian.

3) Look up John 16:13. Who is the Teacher that God has given to us?

4) That's right - it is the Holy Spirit. Notice that the Bible always refers to the Holy Spirit as a person, by calling Him He or Him. Now let's discover where the Holy Spirit lives. Turn to 1 Corinthians 6:19. Where does He live?

5) With the Holy Spirit living inside of me, God wants to help me know what His special plan for my life is. So God uses:
(a) other Christians
(b) the Holy Spirit
(c) the Bible
(d) things that happen to me
(e) my prayers
(f) all of the above
to lead me and help me grow.

6) A new born baby has many people and things that help him/her to grow. One of those things is food. We as Christians need "food" to grow. Go back to 1 Peter 2:2 and see what that "food" is.

7) But sometimes the Bible is difficult to understand. So that is why God uses the Holy Spirit to speak to me through His Bible. Look up 1 Corinthians 2:14; Who does it say will not be able to understand the Bible, with the help of the Holy Spirit?

8) That's right - the natural man. The "natural man" is someone who has not asked Jesus to come into their heart and life. But you have, so that means you will be able to understand the Bible, with the help of whom?

9) But for the Holy Spirit to help you understand the Bible, you must first be reading the Bible. So we want to help you get started in reading a little bit of your Bible each day. The best time is when you first wake up (but you can pick another time, if it is better for you). We recommend that you begin with the Gospel of John in the New Testament.

10) We have posted a chart to help you get started. Just "flip the switch" and read the verses for each day. Put a mark beside the verses when you have read them. You may want to keep the chart in your Bible or post it on your bulletin board, so that it is easy for you to mark it off as you read each day. Just go ahead and print out a copy. This will help you get started in reading the Bible

11) So just to review. what is the book called that God speaks to me through?

12) My main Teacher in helping me understand the Bible is whom?

13) But God has given me many special blessings when I became a Christian. One of them is being able to talk to Him. Being able to talk to God Is called what?

14) That's right - it is called prayer. We will learn more about prayer in a later lesson. But that doesn't mean you can't talk to God in prayer right now. So when you finish reading the Bible passage each day, just bow your head and tell God how much you love Him and thank Him for the Bible and what you have read. Ask Him to help you live your life today so that it is pleasing to Him.

15) God has given me something else that is new, as well. You will find this answer in 2 Corinthians 5:17.

16) Right a new nature - we will learn more about that in our next lesson as well.

17) God has also given us protection against an enemy that we have too. Who is this enemy? You will find out his name in 1 Peter 5:8.

18) But you do not have to be afraid of him, because the __________________, Who lives in you is bigger and stronger than Satan (the devil). Read 1 John 4:4.

19) See how important prayer and the Holy Spirit are in our lives as a growing Christian? And we will learn more about prayer and victory over our enemy in future lessons as well. So we have lots of exciting lessons ahead. We look forward to hearing from you when you finish this lesson.
